Buyer’s Guide

Things To Know Before You Buy

Talk to any Vitamix owner about their blender and you will hear about how versatile, effective, and powerful it is. Vitamix can handle it all from smoothies and drinks to soups and vegetables and blending batters.

If you are not quite ready to purchase a Vitamix blender, continue reading our Vitamix buyer’s guide below to learn more about what is unique about Vitamix blenders, and what features you may or may not need.

Why Do Vitamix and BlendTec use Plastic Pitchers?

Good question! Both manufacturers cite safety and tout plastic as safer for their machine’s powerful high-speed blending. According to Vitamix, they have “…not found a suitable glass or stainless container design to meet the strict safety and performance requirements.” And if you ask BlendTec, they’ll tell you something similar and point out that glass jars have the potential to shatter during high-speed blending and “are heavier and more difficult to grip, pour, and store”.

Vitamix Basics

So What is Different About a Vitamix Blender?

Every Vitamix blender features at least a 2-horsepower motor, it can blend almost anything, including many items that other blender brands struggle with. The motor doesn’t overheat and stays cool even after the toughest of blending jobs. For comparison, the Blendtec 560 lists a 3-horsepower motor at peak. However, taking into consideration the wattage, their motor is actually producing around 2-horsepower as well.

Stainless Steel Blades
With aircraft-grade stainless steel blades on a Vitamix blender, you can tackle the toughest ingredients.

Container Design
The blender container is designed to always be moving ingredients back towards the blades. This results in faster and smoother blending, no matter what ingredients you pile in.

Do You Need Presets?

Is worth paying more for a Vitamix model with preset blending programs? It is important to understand that the presets are just timed blending programs and don’t adjust for what or how much you are blending.

Preset blending programs useful if you follow a recipe where you want to just push a button for certain blending tasks. The presets are designed for specific container sizes and volume of ingredients so they won’t be as useful if you make any changes to the recipe or container size.

Overall, it comes down to each buyer’s personal preference. Preset blending programs can be helpful but you pay more to have them. They aren’t needed and many consumers do fine without them.

Made In The USA

Vitamix is designed and built in the USA. Vitamix states on their blenders are “made in the USA with 70% minimum US content”. What this means is while they are mostly made in the USA – some parts still come from overseas partners. To their credit – very few small appliance products are 100% built with USA parts. They get our vote for their efforts to support local economies.
